Chapter Twelve

“HEY,” I SAID WHEN NOAH walked into the shop. “How are you?”

He smiled, nodding. “I’m great. I thought I’d stop by for some ice cream. Haven’t been in here in days.” He grinned now.

I smiled. “Great. What would you like? Oh, and how is Jamie?” Jamie was Noah’s sister, who I at first thought was his girlfriend, but she set me straight on that before she left town to go back to college. I’d intended to ask him about her, but with a murder on my mind, I had forgotten.

He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. He was dressed casually today, and I wondered if he was off work. “She’s doing great. She got settled into her dorm, and she’s ready for her last year of school.”

“You know, I hate to say it, but I kind of envy her. While I wouldn’t say that my college years were the best years of my life, it was still a lot of fun. Now I have to pay bills.”

He chuckled, showing his dimples. “Yeah, those bills can be a drag. How about I try out the berry blast?”

“Oh, you will love that. It’s a mixed berry ice cream cone with berries and chocolate sprinkles pressed into it. It’s yummy.”

“Well, sign me up then.”

I got to work scooping his ice cream. “What kind of cookie?” Two other customers left the shop, and Chloe came to stand beside me.

“Hi, Noah.”

“Hi, Chloe. How about a cherry chip cookie?”

“Oh, my favorite,” Chloe said and got one for him from the display case while I rolled the ice cream cone in the freeze-dried berries and chocolate sprinkles. There was a knack to doing it so that the ice cream didn’t come off the cone, and if you didn’t press it on firmly when you scooped it, you were going to be sad when it all came apart.

“Here you are,” I said, handing him the ice cream cone. “So, anything new on the case?”

His brow furrowed, and he shook his head. “Not a lot. And I know you two are staying out of trouble and not even thinking about this case, right?”

Chloe rang him up, and I leaned on the counter. “You know how it is. We’ve been bitten by the sleuthing bug.”

He rolled his eyes. “You’re just nosy. Stay out of trouble.”

I would have liked to stay out of trouble, but I was already neck-deep in this thing. I filled him in on everything we had found out so far. “If I had to name a killer, then it would have to be Leo. I would hate that for his mother, but he had the biggest grudge against Benjamin, and it makes the most sense.”

He bit the tip of his ice cream off while he thought about it. “I talked to Susan, and she said her oldest boys had trouble with him. From their perspective, it sounds like it was Benjamin that was the trouble. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when a family doesn’t get along.
